Here at Fields Lodge we have a never ending supply of suggestions to while away your days! Of course, if it’s nice weather, then the beach and walking has to be the first point of call, but what if the weather isn’t so good?
Never fear! We have a multitude of suggestions for ‘not so good’ weather days too! Read on to enjoy a few suggestions, and this is nowhere near the total of suggestions, we have loads more up our sleeves, if you’d like more!
I love making great food for our lovely guests her at Fields Lodge Bed and Breakfast. It’s one of the reasons we’ve been awarded so many Breakfast Awards and are officially Pembrokeshire’s Finest Breakfast! Every day we make fresh bread–white and wholemeal and I’ll tell you why….
Scary!! Where has the time gone? Of course, this year is different, as we have only been open since the middle of May and things are still a little different.

Skomer & the Puffins

Yaay! The Puffin population has increased and at the recent count, we are at nearly 40,000 Puffins! How fantastic is that?
However, there is a downside, and as so many people are keen to visit, after not being allowed to last year, the tickets to visit are in short supply.
And soon, the Pufflings will be making an appearance! Check out the image above by the very talented Monica Doshi, a guest who has stayed with us several times, and who loves Skomer and the Puffins.
More tickets have just been added to actually land on Skomer as a Day Visitor-and cancellations do happen, so it’s good advice to keep checking the online booking site if you’d like to go
There are also boat trips around Skomer, and if you find that the day you want to go is already sold out, then it might be worth looking at Voyages of Discovery in St Davids, as they do a trip from there that comes down to Skomer. As this trip is not as well known (as yet) there are often tickets available here.
Best Tip: If you know you want to go, book your tickets as soon as you can
Eating Out
Eat at Milford Waterfront
It is pretty busy in Pembrokeshire at the moment. Not Cornwall busy, I would have to say(thankfully!) but there is demand in the good places to eat.
My advice here is to book your evening meals before you arrive. Leaving it until you arrive will mean that your first, second and maybe even third choice will be already booked up.
Lunchtimes, there’s still scope for a late booking, but an evening will definitely need to be booked.
Best Tip: Plan where you’d like to eat and book it up before you get here
Heritage Walks & Milford Museum

I am delighted that this year the Museum on Milford Marina is now fully open after a long refurbishment. The outside of the museum now looks like it would have done back in 1797. Do pay it a visit for a few hours interactive fun(even for adults) and don’t forget to keep an eye out for ‘Feilds Parrallel Rule’ designed by one of the ancestors of Fields Lodge
And, hot off the press…well, it’s not even at the press yet…there are new ‘Heritage Walks’ to be enjoyed along Milford Marina.
There are 3 separate walks and they are interactive, so you can learn of Milford’s rich history whilst enjoying the surroundings.
Once the press release has gone live, I will write about it more fully.
So, these, together with the Quaker Walk around Milford Haven will give you lots of interesting views and history to enjoy

St Dwynwens Day is on 25th January and is the ‘Welsh’ Valentines Day. She is the Welsh patron Saint of Lovers and is celebrated on this day, and we’re all about Romance here at Fields Lodge Boutique B&B.

Here we are in lockdown at the moment in sunny Pembrokeshire. We are so lucky to be in this area to live through these lockdown weeks.
So many past and future guests have contacted me to let me know how much they are missing their stay in Pembrokeshire this year, so far. So I wanted to try and bring a taste of Pembrokeshire to those that are missing our great county.

As I write this(February) I have already enjoyed watching the first snowdrops appear-there are certain places in Pembrokeshire where you will have a wall of snowdrops and I do love to go visit these.
What to do on Poor Weather days in Pembrokeshire through the winter months
There’s a perception that the weather in Wales is always bad., always raining.
Even I used to think that, when I worked in my corporate job, so following on here are some of my favourite ideas of things to do on poor weather days in Pembrokeshire.
Importantly, what I have learned, from taking more notice of our weather, so that I can effectively advise guests, is that, that perception is wrong!
There are not THAT many days where, when we have ‘poor’ weather, that it’s in for the whole day. The weather does tend to come in and go out with the tides (I’m taking real old wives tales here!) and on bad weather days, that does give you some comfort.
In fact, it’s quite often true- ‘rain before 7(am), gone by 11(am)’. Guests have thought me a weather witch doctor when I have assured them that would happen on a particular day!
But, what to do if the weather is bad, and, for this, I am thinking more about the winter months here. If you’re looking for some summer months inspiration then check out my ideas here.
I used to think this too actually about our Welsh Weather, that was until I got into the hospitality industry, what a surprise I had then, once I started taking more notice!
Valentine’s Day, also called Saint Valentine’s day, February 14th is a day for celebrating love in many parts of the world. Originating as a Western Christian Feast day, although it is not a public holiday in any country, it is widely celebrated linked with romance and love.
Many stories of martyrdom are associated with ‘Valentine’s’ through time, one being a Saint Valentine of Rome, who was imprisoned for marrying Roman Soldiers forbidden to marry, and according to legend, during his imprisonment he restored the sight of the daughter of his judge. Before his execution, he wrote a letter to the daughter and signed it ‘Your Valentine’.
The day became associated with romantic love in the times of Chaucer, when lovers expressed their feelings for each other with tokens-flowers, confectionary and greeting cards (known as Valentine’s).
We see it today with hearts, flowers, swans and doves, cupids and cherubs amongst others.

So, the Puffins have now left Skomer Island, and that now means they are now replaced by the seal pups!
Don’t you just love a seal? They’re sooo cute! How can you fail to not feel joy when you see a seal-even in a photo, never mind if you get to see them swimming in the water.
Milford Waterfront is organising lots of events over the summer months. It’s great to see that the Port of Milford Haven has really got its’ eye on Tourism and making the Marina a ‘must visit’ place on the lists of locals and visitors alike.
July brings the beginning of the end of Puffin Season on Skomer Island.
The Puffins arrive in April for breeding season and then they reclaim their burrow from a previous year. They meet up with their partners and set about the business of breeding.
Weddings in Pembrokeshire-you may wonder how we could be involved in these. You’d be surprised!
From the usual hosting relatives that have had to travel, to hen pamper days, to hosting the bride & her entourage and organising make-up and hair stylists on the big day, to then being the romantic backdrop to the Wedding night, we have helped make many memories.
The FIRST Puffin has landed onto Skomer Island! It’s only the 19th of March and we have the first one landed-that’s early! And that means that the numbers will just grow as the days move closer towards April, which is when they usually arrive.
Over this weekend just gone, a hundred puffins were seen rafting in North Haven, which is one of their favoured bays on Skomer.
This is exciting news as it’s always great to know that the Puffin is growing from strength to strength 3bvbjjin numbers on Skomer.
So, to celebrate, any booking made this week direct with us here at Fields Lodge will receive a free Puffin Pack!!
Isn’t that what they say?? March is when we see the weather changing to Spring and the clocks going forward for summertime.
The origins of the saying
Where on earth did that saying come from? Well, here’s a spoiler-you may be disappointed! I thought I would research it, thinking it may have had some historic origin, inspiring the Mad Hatter stories etc, but no! It started life in Illinois in a high school in the early 1900s. Then the phrase was used by a broadcaster of a basket ball game. The phrase was later applied to be trademarked by the IHSA(Illinois High School Association) and in 1996 the IHSA and the NCAA went to court over the phrase and ended with them agreeing on a dual use trademark. So, as it’s a trademarked phrase-does that mean I can’t use it here??? OOOO!!! worrying! I’ve just checked, and I’m not sure I can! So, I’ve altered the title slightly, just in case! I don’t think I can afford an American lawsuit!
