What to do on Poor Weather Days in Pembrokeshire

What to do on Poor Weather days in Pembrokeshire through the winter months

There’s a perception that the weather in Wales is always bad., always raining.
Even I used to think that, when I worked in my corporate job, so following on here are some of my favourite ideas of things to do on poor weather days in Pembrokeshire.

Importantly, what I have learned, from taking more notice of our weather, so that I can effectively advise guests, is that, that perception is wrong!

There are not THAT many days where, when we have ‘poor’ weather, that it’s in for the whole day. The weather does tend to come in and go out with the tides (I’m taking real old wives tales here!) and on bad weather days, that does give you some comfort.

In fact, it’s quite often true- ‘rain before 7(am), gone by 11(am)’. Guests have thought me a weather witch doctor when I have assured them that would happen on a particular day!

But, what to do if the weather is bad, and, for this, I am thinking more about the winter months here. If you’re looking for some summer months inspiration then check out my ideas here.

  • Dean - Henry Tudor

Henry Tudor Lands at Mill Bay

Henry Tudor landed at Mill Bay on 7th August 1485 (534 years ago). He marched from here to Bosworth to ultimately take the Crown at the Battle of Bosworth from Richard III and this was the start of the Tudor Dynasty. He was only 28!

We have hosted a lovely gentleman called Dean today who is literally walking in Henry’s footsteps and is making the trek from Mill Bay to Bosworth. He plans to arrive in Bosworth 534 years t the day that Henry arrived. What a fabulous journey to make. He is walking for two purposes, he studied History at Oxford and concluded that Henry VII was our greatest Monarch and having just retired, felt he has both the time and fitness to pay homage to his great achievement. Dean is also Type 1 Diabetic, so his walk will also raise about £2,000 for Diabetes UK-what a great thing to do!

    Skomer Island-Arriving

    Arriving on the Island

The boat will ferry you to the set down point on the island. Depending on whether the tide is low or high, will dictate how many steps you will have to climb. Once you’re at the top, the island is pretty flat, but to get up to the top there are quite a few steps to negotiate.

Skomer Island- What’s on the island

    What’s on Skomer?

There is nothing on Skomer as far as cafes, restaurants are concerned. You can buy small bottle water at the starting point and again at the Farmhouse in the middle of the island but that’s it. So, you need to bring with you whatever you would like to eat for the day. You are usually on the island for 5 hours.

Last few Puffins still on Skomer Island

Still wanting to see a Puffin?

I took a visit to Skomer Island this week-into the last few days of the Puffins on the island for 2018. It has been a great year for Skomer Puffins–over 30,000 puffins were counted this year, and as far as a population is concerned, Skomer Puffins are bucking the trend, as other Puffin colonies elsewhere in the world are declining. So much so, that the Puffin is now classed as an endangered species.

Skomer Puffins make the BBC News

    Skomer Puffins are thriving

How wonderful, the BBC have profiled the Puffins on Skomer Island!

I have long been an advocate of these fantastic birds. For me, they are such healing creatures, you cannot fail to watch a puffin and smile. They just make everything in the world alright. To see them clumsily trying to get airborne from the water is a delight. Watching them you would never think that they could fly the huge distances they do when they migrate from Skomer Island in late July each year.

  • Latitude Discount Voucher

    Fields Lodge Vouchers

    Discount vouchers for shopping locally

We are now offering Fields Lodge Vouchers, these are vouchers that offer discounts at shops, eateries and businesses in the locality.

I am keen to ensure my guests really enjoy and make the most of staying with me here, in this little corner of West Pembrokeshire. We have some great small local businesses that offer something a little different to the ‘usual’ offering at bigger town high streets, with their replicated large businesses and a uniform feel, no matter what town or city you are visiting.

I have recently been liaising with several local businesses to offer discounts/money off/free gifts for my guests when they use their establishments.

    What vouchers are  on Offer?

So, when you shop here, you get that one-off outfit not seen in Debenhams or that little Welsh delicacy that you just can’t get at home. You also have the chance to eat at some really great eateries and sample some outstanding local produce. Plus, quite often you get a much keener price than you can find, even on the internet plus, of course, some great old fashioned, personal service. You can also have the opportunity to take home a taste (or two) of Pembrokeshire and for those organised amongst you, you can buy your whole years Birthday and anniversary cards saving you a considerable amount in the meantime!

I have partnered with the following businesses to offer all my guests that book with me some great offerings. Once you book, I will send you codes so that you can access the offerings, and start planning what you will be spending your money on whilst you stay!

I know all these business owners myself and you can rest assured they are ready and willing to help you with whatever purchase you may have in mind. They really do care!

Here’s the current list, and this will change as time goes by.

  • Castles in Pembrokeshire, history coming alive

    Pembroke Castle
    Pembroke Castle

There are many Castles in Pembrokeshire and we are lucky to have such a wealth of them, many have survived the ravages of time and have some great stories to tell.

I would always advise taking a guided tour should you have the option, as this always brings history alive and fires up your own imagination whilst you are walking on ground that has been walked on by many hundreds of people over the ages.
