I have lived in Fields Lodge for over 20 years now-in fact, it is now the property that I have lived ‘the most’ of my life in.

It’s strange,  as when I think of the word ‘home’, I instantly feel as though I’m referring to the property that was ‘home’ when I was a child, where I grew up with my brother, Phil and which was the only home my Mother & Father knew for the whole of their married life-no living over a brush back in those days (now, there’s an old fashioned saying!). So, by the time I came along, the house had been ‘home’ for my Mum & Dad for 10 years already.

And yet, the terraced house with the small yard still feels like my ‘home’ over and above anything I’ve lived in whilst I’ve been away. I’ve always yearned for a place that felt like home, but maybe what I’m yearning for is the feeling that ‘home’ gave me….security, a deep sense of belonging and feeling loved, a tradition, surrounded by elders (neighbours) that loved you and showed you the way of the world, a surety that things were always going to be ok.

And, as I sit here and write this, I realise this is what I have had here at Fields Lodge.

Community

 

Being part of the community of the village of Herbrandston is like being part of a big family. There are neighbours that would drop at a minutes’ notice to help you, and I’ve had much evidence of that over the years.

Going to the village Hub, is like going to a family ‘do’ there are many, many people there that you can say hello to and have a conversation-you’re never lonely in Herbrandston. And, in recent years, with the small housing estate being built on the grounds of the old Sir Benfro Hotel, there are now many new residents to add more flavour and dimension to village life.

It’s been a difficult decision to offer Fields Lodge for sale, but it’s one of those moments when you have to decide to downsize before it’s too late. I saw this many times in my banking career, many people left it too late before they made the choice, and then sometimes, it just was no longer feasible for them. So, I’m doing it now whilst I still can lift boxes!

Before it was a B&B

Before I turned the house into a B&B, it was a lovely family home. My bedroom was the room now called ‘Sleeping Bay’ and I loved the fact that I had a dressing room in which to get dressed and ready for the day. My office was upstairs in the room now called ‘Stepping Stones’ and I was lucky to be able to work from home on times-even before it became popular, like it is now.

I’m afraid I was guilty of filling pretty much all the wardrobes in all the bedrooms (guilty secret…I had a whole wall of wardrobes for my shoes in one bedroom!), so it was a shock to decamp into the stables to make room for the B&B.

The house itself is pretty much exactly as it was before it was a B&B…except one bedroom was made into a dining room and another was made into an ensuite for upstairs, so in a flash, it can easily go back to its’ original use-a lovely family home.

And then, of course, you have the joy of deciding what to use the stables for….in the very beginning I ran a wellness retreat where yoga took place in the stables, it’s a great light airy space and ideal for this or it would make a great painting studio- the choices are endless!
