    Social Media in the Tourism Industry

    Social media…I run a bed & breakfast, no surprise there then! However, so many people think running a bed and breakfast entails cooking a breakfast and then you have the rest of the day off! I wish!

    Don’t get me wrong, I love what I do, I love doing the best I can for my guests but there’s a lot more to it than just cooking breakfast!

    Social media is one of the other ‘jobs’ that needs to be done. Not just scrolling through what your friends are up to, but creating a ‘story’ of your business, what you’re up to, what’s out there for guests. A complete picture in an instance, if you like!

    Google Garage

    I recently attended a Google Garage event, it’s a project by Google to help more businesses become effective online. I’m pretty busy on Social Media, I think- but there’s always the next trend, the latest change and things change in the land of ‘web’ so quickly you have to stay on the top of your game to keep up with the pack. I was recently informed that there are around 1000 accommodation providers in Pembrokeshire and bearing in mind that most people find you in the web, it’s important to stay up in the rankings do you can be found!

    Do you know, for instance, that in the U.K., the average amount of time spent online is 5hours 48 mins per day!! 42 million people use Social Media and 94% of Brits buy online. Compare this to 36% in Italy!!

    Browsers want to find what they’re looking for within 3 clicks and have an attention span of 2.7 seconds, which means…well done…we now have an attention span shorter than a goldfish!!

    We expect websites to load in less than 3 seconds, so as you can see, Social Media is a vital part of today’s businesses, no matter what industry you’re in! (I can see I have some work to do here-my website takes 5 seconds to load-apparently!)

    I do try my best to give guests, potential, current and past a quick glance of what’s going on by use of our Social Wall, which is a snapshot of all of our Social Media, except for You Tube, which for some reason, I can’t get to load! So, you have to look at You Tube separately!

    It would be lovely to hear what you would like to see on Social Media-I’d much rather post items of value and interest, rather than what I think you might like to see.

    You can now learn direct with Google, and they do a free certification course if you’d like to get some proof you know what you’re doing. I think there are about 93 different types of learning opportunities on there, so I’m sure you’ll find something on there to suit you!
