Looking to visit the Puffins on Skomer Island this year whilst you’re staying with us here at Fields Lodge Boutique Bed & Breakfast?

 

Some things have changed and there are some things you need to be prepared for, if visiting the Puffins is on your bucket list for your trip to Pembrokeshire.

 

Read on to find out all you need to know about the latest Puffin news and to make sure you DO get to see the Puffins!

Queues to visit the Puffins?

So, if you’ve investigated going to see the Puffins at Skomer Island, you’ve probably come across the stories of really long queues and the need to get up at Stupid o’Clock to be able to get a ticket….

Well, not this year.

And probably not going forward.

An online ordering system has been created, and so you can book your tickets online and KNOW what time boat you are going on and also be sure of going (weather permitting, of course….we still haven’t fixed that issue!)

That’s the good news….you can enjoy a lie on, a leisurely breakfast and meander down to your boat ready for our trip

But here’s the DOWNSIDE…

If you haven’t already booked your ticket…BOOK IT NOW!

The tickets are FLYING off the system, pretty much as soon as they go on, so IF YOU SEE A SPACE…BOOK IT.

If you leave booking your ticket until you arrive at your holiday destination, whether it’s here or another holiday property, you have probably left it too late.

AS you know, I keep in regular contact with the company that run the ferry over, the lovely wardens at Lockley Lodge and the skippers of the Ferries, so I aim to bring you the most up to date information.

Here are my insider tips for you:

1. If you see a space-book it-online booking here
2. Check the system regularly, as they do get cancellations and a few tickets can land unexpectedly …for instance, yesterday(at time of writing, no tickets at all for May, and today..a few tickets available)
3. The C.ovid distancing rules could change in the future(any day really) and so, the boat and island capacity would then double to what it is now…so more tickets will become available then
4. If you can’t get a ticket to LAND on Skomer, then look to book an AROUND Skomer cruise(or one of the other on the water cruises)…you’ll still see thousands of Puffins and you’ll also see them from the sea side, meaning you’ll have a great view of the cliff faces and the guides on these trips are full of great information for you. (Tip: bring a little picnic & a hot flask with you to eat whilst you’re out on the boat, layer up-it can get cold out at sea and bring a blanket for your legs..and a pair of binoculars…we can supply you with all that if you like)
5. If there appears to be a lot of demand, they will put on some extra ‘on the water’ cruises, so always keep checking these regularly
6. Give the office a ring to see if there are any last minute cancellations that have come up and if not, you can put your name on a waiting list for any additional boats that may be put on ( 01646 603123 / 01646 603109)
7. You can always have the option of a Private Charter Cruise …..for £175 per hour (rates correct at time of writing) you can have exclusive use of the boat, and the skipper and guide will take you wherever you would like to go. You can have up to 12 people on the boat (current restrictions in numbers). An hour is sufficient to give you a good around Skomer Cruise.

 

My most important piece of advice is to book your tickets as soon as you can.
