A Walrus in Pembrokeshire
Good Heavens! There’s a Walrus in Pembrokeshire!
A what, you say….

I know….read on to find out how. Maybe it’s heard about our award winning breakfasts are here at Fields Lodge Boutique Bed & Breakfast!
How is there a Walrus in Pembrokeshire
So, how has a walrus ended up in Pembrokeshire?
It’s not exactly known, but it is thought that the walrus has come this far south by floating on a melting iceberg, or part of one. It may also have been disturbed and swam off, or it could just be that it has swam this far in search of food.
Their normal home is the Arctic Circle, so, whichever way it’s got here, undoubtedly, it is a long way from home.
I know it will eat well, as Skomer is a marine reserve with blooming sea life stocks (this is why the Puffins do so well here too), but I do wonder will it be lonely?
Will it take to our lovely Atlantic Grey Seals and make friends, so it’s not so lonely or will it be kept well away?
Either way, it is a joy to see but we are keeping it’s location a secret so that it doesn’t get disturbed.
It arrived from Ireland, where it was first spotted, and swam the great distance to Wales in just a couple of days. We know it is the same one as the experts have identified it from white markings on it’s flippers and it’s tusks.
Sightings
Our friends the Celtic Deep (brilliant boat trips) have had the honour of watching it munch on razor clams this week and we all look forward to updates to know it’s still safe.
There is no plan to try and return it to the arctic circle, as historically when this has happened in the past, the animals just swim off.
So, we will enjoy his presence whilst he’s here, we are delighted to have a visitor in Pembrokeshire whilst we are in lockdown!
When you come and stay, grab a boat trip, and you never know you might be lucky enough to catch sight of him!
