Here are some simple tips to keep in mind when taking photos. The important thing is to enjoy taking photos, to create memories for you and loved ones to enjoy in the years to come.

  1. Take more photos

The key to improving any skill is to practice. The more photographs you take, the better you will become.

  1. The best camera to use…is the one you have with you

Whether it’s a just a basic phone or a professional type camera, the best camera to use on any given day, is the one that is with you. The most perfect shot can be taken with a phone camera, and any shot is better than no shot.

  1. Learn all you can about the camera you use most.

This means reading the manual or tips to use, so that you learn all the features that are available to you, and then use them. Even if it a phone camera, investigate all the settings you can use, as the right setting can make a he difference-some even have settings for taking food shots; great for Instagram!

  1. Think about your composition

Be mindful about your shot. What are you hoping to achieve from it? A memory, an image to share, an emotion to evoke. Being more mindful will create a better composition for you, rather than just snapping away

  1. Use a tripod

Even a phone camera creates a better composition when on a tripod. It slows you down a little, which makes you more mindful (see point above), gives you a steadier base to work from and you can also rotate through, to see if a different composition might work better for you

  1. Ask permission

It’s important to ask permission if you’re taking any shot with people in, as a person’s face is covered by the GDPR (previously known as Data Protection) laws.

  1. Use the Rule of Thirds

This rule is where you divide your proposed composition into thirds laterally and vertically, making your composition into 9 squares. The ideal is to position your image along the intersection of these lines, rather than have your focus point right in the middle of the shot.

  1. Try the same shot from varying heights

If you’re usually standing when you take a shot, then try getting down on the floor and take the shot from here, or try holding your camera up above your head to take the shot. Different perspectives can bring a whole different feel to your photographs.

  1. Create Depth in your image

One of the best ways to encourage emotion in an image is to create depth. You can do this by using leading lines, such as a road going off into the distance or by including something In the foreground, such as a flower close up when you are taking the landscape behind. You can add in Tip no. 8 and get down low to get a flower into the composition in this way.

  1. Use Eye Contact

For taking people, getting eye contact is as engaging as it is in reality. To get this, have the camera at their eye level, so if you’re taking children, then use Tip no.8 again and get down to their level. At the same time, ensure you do not have any distracting background that will spoil the image, such as a lamp post coming out of the top of someone’s head!
